Bordeaux Blanc

The height of summer in Copenhagen brings with it many cherished traditions. One eagerly awaited such is the annual Bordeaux Blanc tasting at Gammel Kongevej 150. Here a small group gathers each year in the appropriately golden Scandic light of the season. Glasses catch the sun and the air hums with quiet anticipation.

When it comes to whites, our TWI hearts are irrevocably entwined with Bordeaux. It is a region that never ceases to surprise… in a good way!

It can be refined and unpredictable, capable of subtle revelations as much as grand gestures. The odds of disappointment are slim; instead, one is far more likely to be disarmed by pleasure where it is perhaps not readily expected. Even wines bearing humbler names often arrive ready to be discovered as memorable souvenirs.

Take the 1981 Bouscaut Blanc for example. A bottle that is seemingly only just now reaching its plateau.

Ultimately though we have the 1961 Couhins Lurton which managed to steal the show on the night.

It reminded us in the most profound way of what Bordeaux, and only Bordeaux, can achieve. It displayed a mesmerising harmony of age and vitality, delicacy and depth. Should you ever stumble upon a bottle do not hesitate to pick it up for the song it is bound to be priced at.
