Chateâu Poujeaux 2000-2022

Château Poujeaux is the quiet kid at the back of the Bordeaux classroom. The one who doesn’t swagger about with a Grand Cru Classe badge.

Tucked away in Moulis-en-Médoc, it’s a place that’s learned to do more with less, turning grit and gravel into grace. There’s no showboating, just craftsmanship, patience, and a stubborn belief that real quality doesn’t need to shout. It’s a wine that earns its respect the old-fashioned way: through taste, not flash.

There’s muscle in it, sure, but also balance, elegance and a quiet confidence that builds with age. Château Poujeaux is an underdog, yes. But in the glass, it stands shoulder to shoulder with many of the greats. And that, in the end, is all that matters.

Château Poujeaux is the affordable bottle which unruffled goes toe-to-toe with the posh crowd. It’s proof that value and greatness aren’t necessarily strangers but sometimes just happen to live down a quieter lane.

Walk the Walk

One of my personal favorites on the left bank is Château Poujeaux located in Moulis. The wine has always been of high quality. It demonstrates this with lots of up front fruit and a classic peppery, cabernet backbone and it gives the wine a lot of personality.

During recent years, and certainly since 2009, the wines have gradually become even better and they represent excellent value for money. The introduction of the second wine, La Salle de Poujeaux, which is a pleasant, soft wine rating in the upper eighties, has benefitted the Grand Vin and today Poujeaux is turning out the finest wines in the history of the chateau.

The wine can easily compete against the Grand Cru Classes. Readers will find Poujeaux offers a similar level of quality but often at a much more competitive price.

Château Poujeaux is owned by the Cuvelier family who purchased the estate in 2008 and it is managed by the talented Christophe Labenne. The Cuvelier family also owns the Premier Grand Cru Classé estate, Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion.
