Krug 1982-2008

Krug is a wine of rare and legendary status. It is coveted. It sits at the pinnacle in people’s minds of what is possible. It is perceived as magic in some ways.

So, how to approach a hallowed vintage such as the 1982 with all its weight of history and accolades? Could it still deliver pleasure beyond the smug self-satisfaction of saying, “Oh yes, we opened a Magnum of ’82 on a Wednesday night, because… Wednesday?” Would it stand proud against its younger, more vigorous siblings, the 08s and 04s of the world, flexing their freshly disgorged pecs?

We Are The Krug

Well, here’s the thing: our grand thesis, the idea of a noble battle of vintages dissolved faster than the bubbles in our glasses. There was no competition. No wine stepped up and declared itself King of Krug. Instead, each bottle calmly took its seat and adjusted its posture before speaking to us in firm harmony.

"We are the Krug, resistance is futile," was their message.

Instead of fighting for supremacy they formed a collective and easily vanquished us with their unstoppable, bulwark of unity and purpose. It’s not often you can have five glasses in front of you and so very clearly see the phantom thread running through them all.

The connection between the 1982 and 2008 was the most fascinating of all. There seemed to be a direct link through the space time continuum with these two wines. The 1982 with its creamy developed and complex tastes showing where the 2008 will end up. The 2008 sparkling with all the youthful fireworks display one could possibly imagine informed us what the 1982 had once been. It was as if time was not linear but rather happening all at once. A remarkable experience.

There comes a moment at a table with friends and wine when points are irrelevant.

When the joy of the company and the night intermingles with wines of varying degrees of ”quality” and each sip is as treasured as the other. The wines may technically be 90 or 98 points and sure, that is the educated palate making a very valid and sometimes useful judgement. On the other hand, you have the subjective joy factor. This is a very personal response to how a wine enhances your moment of being and how a bottle can be more than the sum of the parts that make for it to be ranked numerically.

For us this subjective evaluation comes through in the tasting note and it is the one we recommend you pay most attention to. Perfection is in fact not a numerical score. It is far more complex.

On this evening these wines were on an intellectual level spanning a certain point gap but they ALL contributed to the moment being intoxicating and everlasting. They were all deserving and generously providing us with pleasure. We urge you to try and seek them all out and let them enhance also your existence. One never regrets opening a bottle like these.

Ultimately the table was a battlefield of empty glasses and half-finished thoughts, and nobody could quite remember when we’d stopped analyzing and started just… being.

They were The Krug and we had not resisted. We had been assimilated into the hive mind and become one with the collective.
